Where in Chesterfield
Midlothian, Bon Air, Brandermill and Moseley
Chesterfield County sits across the James from Richmond, to the south and west. Richmond is Jordan's home market, and these four places are the Chesterfield side of it: close enough that the drive is a line in the quote, not a reason to say no.
Midlothian
The urn fountain in the clip further down this page runs in a Midlothian back yard, lit for the hour after dark. Midlothian stretches along Midlothian Turnpike and out toward Hull Street, and water features in Midlothian, VA range from a single fountain by the back door to a koi pond with a stream running the length of the yard. Jordan builds both, and the small one gets the same ecosystem plumbing as the big one.
Bon Air
Bon Air is just over the river from Richmond's West End, an older, settled corner of the county. If your yard sits under old oaks, water features in Bon Air, VA get shade in August and a blanket of leaves in October, and Jordan plans for both with a skimmer sized for the load and a net before the drop. A quiet water garden with lilies suits a shaded Bon Air yard about as well as anything he builds.
Brandermill
Brandermill was built around Swift Creek Reservoir, so a lot of homes there already look out at water. A pond or pondless waterfall of your own puts the sound where you sit, at the patio instead of across the cove. Jordan builds water features in Brandermill, VA to be heard from the house with the windows open, which is a different design problem from being seen from the dock.
Moseley
Moseley is the western edge of the county, where the yards tend to run bigger. A bigger yard takes a longer stream, more drops in the waterfall and a koi pond you can walk all the way around, and that is the kind of project Jordan likes to draw. Water features in Moseley, VA are still inside his regular drive from Richmond.

Pond care south of the James
What a Chesterfield pond deals with
The pond year in Chesterfield County starts with pollen. Richmond's spring pollen is famous for a reason, and for a few weeks in April a yellow film sits on any still water. A skimmer pulls it off a pond before it sinks; a pond without one gets a layer of it on the bottom. That is one of the reasons Jordan does not build without a skimmer.
Summer is heat, humidity and thunderstorms. The heat pulls water off the surface all week, and a storm can drop an inch in an afternoon and wash mulch and fertilizer in with it. Both are normal. A pond with a waterfall, gravel over the liner and lilies on the surface rides them out; a bare liner with a pump in the corner turns green by the Fourth of July.
In fall the leaves come down, and a pond under oaks or maples can take a season's worth in a fortnight. Netting goes up before the drop and comes off after a service visit, so the leaves never reach the bottom to rot over winter.
Winters south of the river are mild. Most ponds run all year, the waterfall keeps a gap in the ice on the hard nights, and the fish rest on the bottom until the water warms. A fountain like the Midlothian urn can run through winter too, and it is a good thing to look at in January.
Herons and raccoons are everywhere in the county, and both like fish. Jordan builds a deep zone and sets the rock so the koi have cover, and he can add netting or a deterrent if a heron takes an interest.

The estimate
How a Chesterfield estimate works
The range comes first and the drive comes second. The calculator gives you the number for the pond; the call adds what it takes to get to your part of the county.
Run the calculator
Choose koi pond, pondless waterfall, fountainscape or maintenance, answer Jordan's five questions and give the size. Ponds and waterfalls show a range fifteen percent either side of the base figure, rounded to the nearest $500. Fountainscapes show Jordan's fixed ranges.
A free phone call
Jordan goes through the range, asks about access for the excavator and where the pond will sit, and quotes the drive across the river as part of the number.
The site visit
The pond gets marked out on your lawn in Chesterfield. You walk the shape, pick the stone, and the range becomes a figure.

Do you service ponds in Chesterfield that someone else built?

Lights on
An urn fountain lit at dusk in Midlothian
This one was filmed at half past eight on a summer evening. The fountain is a stacked slate urn in a bed of boulders, with a light set low so the water carries the glow. A fountainscape takes a corner of the yard, and it gives you the sound every evening after.
